Patients were included in the study if they met the following inclusion criteria: (1) diagnosis of schizophrenia, (2) a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and (3) a diagnosis of bipolar disorder with at least one episode of acute mania or depression within the previous 12 months.
Results: Of the total participants, 5,927 (13.2%) were diagnosed with schizophrenia. The mean age was 68.9 years (standard deviation, 13.4) and the median duration of illness was 12 months (range, 1-96 months). Of the participants with schizophrenia, 5,927 (13.2%) received a prescription for Seroquel. The most commonly prescribed medications for Seroquel were metoclopramide (9,739), quetiapine (5,731), and lamotrigine (4,339). The mean dosage of Seroquel used by the participants was 10 mg per day. The prevalence of Seroquel-induced anxiety was higher in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder than in the other groups. There were no significant differences in the rates of anxiety and depression in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder or in patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder compared to the other groups.
Conclusions: A meta-analysis of epidemiological studies on the incidence and prevalence of Seroquel-induced anxiety and depression is presented.
